Painting: The Gospel of Luke

Somehow, I have recently found time to do a bit of painting and this is the result.  I painted in the evenings after the kids were asleep and discovered that when you are doing something that you absolutely love, it does not feel like work at all!  I probably put in 40-50 hours into this one and it is 30" x 30", acrylic on canvas.  The painting is on display for the advent season at our church, and below is my artist statement, explaining the painting a bit more....

Luke 1:30-33 says:
But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God.  You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

And so begins the human life of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God-With-Us, our Saviour, our Redeemer, our Messiah.  What an amazing thing that we serve a God who would be born a helpless baby, suffer, die on a cross, and be raised from the dead three days later – all to reconcile His creation back to him.
This painting shows the infant Jesus surrounded by the text of the entire book of Luke from the Bible (which is one account of the life of Jesus).  I wanted to show the magnitude of the weight that this helpless baby already had upon him at birth.  At Christmas, we celebrate God becoming flesh in a tiny baby.  A baby who had his whole life ahead of him.  A baby who would alter the course of history.  A baby who would be key to God’s divine rescue mission!
